It seems that everything has become 'do it yourself' these days. I do not know anything that has been left untouched by people wanting to make or build or fix something on their own. It could be because they do not or can not spend the money or it could be because they like the challenge and like to learn something new.
Whatever it is it seems that making masks for masquerade balls is the new thing. It is almost as if finding the one you want is very difficult and once you find it, it is very expensive or it has a long way to travel in the mail.
If you want to make your own you need to decide on what shape you are looking for. It is good to make your own one because you will be able to make it to fit the size of your head which could be really big or really small - compared to the average that is. You may want a full face or a half face mask. Then you should decide on how you want to wear it. You may just want to hold it up to your face with a stick but you could want something different like having it tied to your head.
Once you have decided on the size, basic shape and the function of it you will naturally want to decorate it and make it look amazing. Dividing it up into sections for different colors is a start. Having it encrusted with some type of jewel looking crafts could be next. And then there is the feathers, you do not want to go past the feathers. Sometimes these can make or break a mask so do not go too far with it. When it comes to mens masks for masquerades you may want to do away with the feathers or just use one.
It looks as though once you have the basics down it is just the decorating that needs to take place. As long as you have a solid shape and base you should be fine. You can make a solid base from plaster of paris. Once you have this it is best to design colors and materials on a piece of paper to get the look you want otherwise you can damage the foundation of your mask. Best of all, do not forget to have a lot of fun.
Wearing masquerade masks is fun. If you want to make masquerade masks then you should not hesitate. Give it a try.
