Get ready for lots of belly laughs, tricks and treats when you show up in one of these costumes.

1. Shrek. The popularity of the Shrek movies has made dressing up like an ogre the cool thing to do. The mask for the ugly green guy will have everyone guessing your identity. It's a great idea if you've got kids who love the movies or if you've got a Fiona in your life who'll dress up as your better half.

2. Police Officer. Impersonate an officer for the night with a realistic-looking policeman costume. The ladies love a man in uniform and you'll have fun playing the role of a civil servant walking his beat. Bring a donut and a cup of coffee to the party to add even more realism to your costume.

3. Elvis. Rock it out this Halloween with the King. Go with the full-on white rhinestone leisure suit and black wig with sideburns. Practice a couple Elvis numbers before the party and bust them out to liven up the mood. The ladies won't be able to help falling in love with you!

4. Saturday Night Fever. No one's more recognizable than John Travolta and his Saturday Night Fever outfit. Show up in a white bell bottom pantsuit with dog eared collar. Get the moves down and you'll steal the show on the dance floor at the party.

5. Mad Hatter. Johnny Depp's take on the Mad Hatter from the new Alice in Wonderland movie has turned madness into a fashionable affliction. Go as this wacky tea party host complete with top hat and tricked out wig. Score extra points by bringing Halloween cookies to go with the tea.

6. Michael Jackson. A tribute to the late great King of Pop is hot this season. Grab your one white sparkling glove and get ready to thrill your audience. You can really have fun with this. Grab a black wig and hat and Sgt. Pepper jacket and you'll have all the Pretty Young Things eating out of your gloved hand.

7. Canned Spam. The meat everyone loves to hate is at the top of best-dressed lists this Halloween. This is a costume you can either make out of cardboard or buy. Either way, it's a hysterical take on tinned, pressed meat.

8. The Joker. All you need is some face paint to pull off the Joker look. Grab a buddy and have him play Batman to your Joker.

9. Santa Claus. Believe it or not, the big red elf himself is going to be hot on the Halloween circuit this year. Don a Santa suit a little early in the season and you'll be the merriest one at the party.

10. The M&M. What could be sweeter than you in tights and a big round candy shell? The M&M has delighted Halloween party goers for years and it's still going strong this year. Make yourself into a peanut or a regular M&M for a night full of wacky fun.

Why Masquerade Masks On Sticks Became Popular

masquerade party masks have a very long and distinguished history. First created in Venice in the 1300s, these masks quickly became a social equalizer.

Like most European nations, Italy and the city of Venice were very class ridden during the 14th century. The nobility did not mix with the middle class and the middle class did not mingle with those living in poverty. However, masquerade parties were enjoyed by individuals in all classes.

While wearing elaborate costumes and ornately decorated masks, individuals were unrecognizable to any who did not know in advance what their costume would be. This created occasions where people of all classes could and did mix and mingle freely.

People of high class were normally more limited in what activities were acceptable when attending a formal party. However, when they put on a masquerade mask, they were able to lose many of their inhibitions and behave more freely. In many cases, actions were taken that would never have happened without the anonymity offered by the mask.

It was not uncommon for people to socialize across class lines when their identities were hidden. In many cases, people began to apply makeup to their faces below the mask so that when the mask was in place, none of the individual's features could be used to establish identity. In some cases, even when the mask was removed, the makeup was enough to conceal identity. These facts led to a great deal of mingling across social boundaries and made all people equal while attending a masquerade ball.

Even in cases where the guests at a masquerade party were limited to members of a single social class, there were many changes in how people behaved. People still tended to let many of their inhibitions go and perform acts that they would never even have considered without the anonymity provided by the mask.

Masquerade masks are still a social equalizer today. While there are not as many hard lines between the classes as there were in the past, there are still many self imposed divisions between people in different levels of society. However, when individuals put on a masquerade mask and attend a party, they forget about all the different factors in society that separate and mingle with other party goers as equals, regardless of identity. This is one reason masquerade party masks have been and continue to be a great social equalizer.

Popular Costume Themes for this Halloween

As we approach the Halloween party season it is clear that online customers are already searching for new costume ideas. Whether you are looking for men women or children, there are some popular themes from the summer that will run through Halloween.

Additionally, the major fancy dress costume manufacturers have been waking up to the fact that there is continued (and rapid) growth in the Halloween costume market and recently there has been a surge in the number of new fancy dress costume ranges specifically targeted at Halloween.

So rather than simply identify and repeat what the most popular themes have been for the last few years, we should also be looking to predict which or the newer ranges will be taking this Halloween by storm and challenging for the position as most popular.

Pirates

This theme should take the number one position due to the popularity of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and the excitement that they have created. This is a fun costume theme and allows the whole family to be involved. The films popularity has also ensured that there are costumes across all price ranges and if you already own a pirate costume and sometimes as they get older they become more realistic, all you need to do is to add the right pirate accessories to complete the look.

Harry Potter

Again another blockbuster year for Harry Potter costumes and a new book to add to the excitement. Although there are some adult fancy dress costumes available, the majority are children related. There is a selection of robes which work well as unisex costumes and to these you can add broomsticks, glasses, ties and scarves for the real feeling of Hogwarts. There is even a Hedwig the Owl costume from Rubies masquerade. Other characters include; Hemione, Ron Weasley and Hagrid. Rubies have also introduced a nice Charm School Witch costume which although isn't strictly Harry Potter related it works well with the theme.

Superman / Supergirl

Undying popularity of these characters with films, cartoons, comics and other merchandising continually being refreshed means that every year Superman is spotted in towns and villages everywhere. Like all good superheroes, the basic concepts stay the same but the audience is continually changing and this year a whole new generation will take on the mantle of being 'The Man of Steel'. There is a wide range of fancy dress costumes available from toddler through to adult so this will be, as always an extremely popular theme.

Batman / Batgirl

Another fantastic Halloween fancy dress costume theme and there are the Classic Batman (grey suit) or the more recent, and more sinister looking, version from Batman Returns. Yes, Robin is popular, as are other superheroes - Flash, Catwoman etc but these do not rank as highly on the popularity chart as Batman.

Couples Costumes

Not a true theme as such but there is a growth in the popularity of couples sharing the same theme. This can be by wearing a specifically designed couples costume - handcuffs, lock and key, nut and bolt or it can be by selecting two costumes from the same overall theme - doctor and nurse, playboy bunny and playboy, fireman and firewoman etc

Ghosts and Demons

Traditional Halloween favourites. Most of these costumes are being treated to a face lift with the introduction of better quality fabrics and accessories and relatively cheap and comfortable masks - mainly based on the 'Scream' movie ghost. The major growth in this segment is for better quality costumes which have repeat wearability.

Saucy and Sexy Halloween Costumes

Halloween is the one time of the year when nearly anything goes and although costume choice will always be a personal issue, costumes portraying seductive or saucy witches and vampiresses always make a good selection. For those more adventurous, the major costume manufacturers are coming out with wigs and accessories to complete these costumes and the overall effect is fantastic. And this is not just for the girls, men's costumes are also be revamped into a more modern form.

These masks are handmade that could comprise of different materials like precious fabrics and feathers. Masks are sold in stores and people d not usually know its historic value like that of masks that are used in the classical Venetian classic theaters.

In Italy, a city is suspended between the skies and the seas - its breath taking view of love and passion. Venice. To see more of its beauty, go and patron the Carnival and dress up with masks and feel the excitement that of the 17 hundreds

Goldoni was a performing artist who has has influenced the typical masks with his comedy. His wit and irony highlighted the Venetian nobles, merchants and servants of their strengths and weaknesses.

The most famous mask that Goldoni has ever created is the Harlequin, a deceitful servant who had affairs with the Pantaloon family. The old man Pantaloon was a very rich man that had plenty of young girls to beset.

The Carnival of Venice drew attention to the entire world as early as the 1700's when noble European men would patron the event to spend their most wanted vacation of luxury, fantasy and lustful desires. Venetians introduced the wearing of masks to these foreigners during their stay at the Carnival.

Adult Avatar Costumes - Popular Halloween Costume Ideas

In 2009, James Cameron released his movie Avatar to the public. This stunning visual piece of art won Oscar awards for its incredible visual effects, artistic direction and cinematography. Viewers around the world became fans of the film, and its mythical world of Pandora as well as the plight of the Na'vi. Now, you can act out your favorite scenes from the movie in your adult avatar costumes.

Many people like to dress up for masquerade parties. Whether it is for Halloween, New Years, or Mardi Gras, your Avatar inspired costume will certainly garner a lot of attention.

The basic costume for almost all the Avatar costumes is that of Neytiri, the Princess of the Omaticaya Clan. Her costume includes just the basics: a full body suit which is covered in the characteristic stripes of her people with a tail. She wears an apron over her groin, but is otherwise "naked". Some kits include arm gauntlets, and beaded bracelet and arm bands. Others do not.

Jake Sully's costume could start with the basic bodysuit. However, to complete that costume you would need an expedition style jacket, a pair of hiking or outdoors pants and some black boots or shoes. Alternately, you could just wear a blue turtleneck underneath the jacket. Or you could simply purchase a kit, which includes the pants, a jacket and a mask.

If you are not feeling terribly bold, but still want to be part of the Avatar contingent, you could go as Dr. Grace. For her costume, add a plain colored tank top and a pair of jeans to the Neytiri costume.

Real fans of this movie may simply want to dress up as themselves as a Na'vi warrior or clan member. A basic Neytiri costume can be a good beginning, but by adding some personal elements, you can make it yours. Add special feathers, paint your face in cool designs, wear novelty beaded necklaces, arm bands and bracelets.

Masks make for easy preparation for the role. However, if you want to make the designs on your Avatar or Na'vi unique, it is best to do your own body and face painting. You will need high quality face paints, and use a blue for your base color, which you will apply to your shoulders, neck, face, and ears. Add dark stripes and contrasting white dots in between to create your design.

If you already have long hair, you can take some time to braid it and put beads and feathers into it to achieve the full Na'vi hair style. Alternately, you can purchase a good quality wig that already is braided or that you can have braided for your costume. Now you are ready for the party in your adult avatar costumes.

How the Most Popular Costumes Got to Be the Most Popular

The most popular fall into a few different categories. There are the most popular of all-time and those costumes that are bound to be the most popular costumes for this year. Another thing to deliberate when thinking about what would be the an appropriate costume is the type of event or reason for the costume.

Some costumes have gained their popularity over the years as traditional Halloween garb. Witches, ghosts and scary monsters fall into this realm of costumes and remain among the most popular costumes for Halloween. As other fictional monsters like Frankenstein and Dracula hit the bookstores and movies, these too have become great costumes for Halloween.

Yet not all of the all-time most popular costumes for Halloween fall into the category of being scary. Some of the most popular are of lovable fictional characters like Alice in Wonderland(C), Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz(C), and some of her sidekicks, the Tin Man, the Lion and the Scarecrow have all become quite popular Halloween Costumes. Costumes like this have retained their popularity along with the books and movies.

Movies still continue to influence choices for the most popular Halloween costume of the year. Especially after the release of a Disney Pixar (TM) movie, certain characters climb the charts in costume fame. For instance pirate costumes though everlastingly a popular costume choice became even more sought after following the release of the Pirates of the Caribbean(C), movies. Princess costumes became more popular after the Disney Princess(C) movies.

Yet, it isn't just Disney (TM) movies that have influenced the popularity of certain costumes. Star Trek characters, Star Wars characters and many other costumes spawned from popular movies. Characters that originated in comic books such as Superman(C) and Batman(C) reclaimed their rights to fame in the list of all-time most popular costumes after the release of newer movies.

The year's most popular costumes seem to coincide with the year's most popular movies, but let there be no mistake about it: sometimes the popularity is short lived and when the magic of the movie has worn off, so has the popularity of the costume. It could be argued that characters such as Sponge Bob Square Pants(C), Strawberry Shortcake(C), or even the Little Mermaid(C) fall into the category of lost popularity though some masses would argue that they will always remain popular.

On the opposite end of the spectrum are characters like the Phantom of the Opera(C) that have remained popular for years. These costumes and Phantom of the Opera(C) masks continue to be best sellers and seem like they will never go out of style. As it is, this is the longest running play ever on Broadway and so the fascination for the Phantom of the Opera(C) was not just a passing infatuation as some other fictional characters have been.

For masquerade balls the popular costumes remain those of a true gentleman in his ruffled shirt, a cummerbund and suit and his lady in a flowing gown or dress with a full skirt and petticoat. Yet for other types of costume parties, the popular costumes tend to be fashioned after historical or fictional couples. For instance, Anthony and Cleopatra, Bonnie and Clyde or even Fred and Wilma Flintstone are popular Halloween party costumes.

Deciding which costumes are the most popular costumes depends on whether you are speaking in terms of all-times or for just the current year. Costumes that retain popularity usually coincide with fictional characters that have remained popular though the hands of time, whereas popular costumes of the year are sometimes merely fads that fade away after the popularity of a movie dies down. If you are looking for a costume that will remain popular, focus on character costumes that have been around for years.
